South Sudan General Medical Council Launches Online Portal for Practitioner Registration and Issuance of New Permanent Certificates

JUBA, South Sudan – February 25, 2026 – The South Sudan General Medical Council (SSGMC) today launched a new online application system through its website, https://ssgmc.gov.ss, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation of healthcare regulation in the country. The portal is now live for all medical practitioners.

In a major step towards enhancing the integrity and security of the medical register, the SSGMC has announced that all medical practitioners (General Practitioners and Specialists) who currently hold a Certificate of Registration from the Council are required to apply online for a new Permanent Registration Certificate effective from March 2, 2026. This new certificate will feature a unique registration code for each practitioner, creating a more secure and easily verifiable system.

“This launch fulfills a core part of our strategic plan to modernize the council’s operations and uphold the highest standards of medical practice,” said Prof. Rose Ajak Costa, Chairperson of the South Sudan General Medical Council. “The new system will create a single, authoritative, and tamper-proof database of all qualified practitioners. For patients and employers, this means they can now instantly verify the credentials of any medical doctor, dentist, or pharmacist through our website.”

Features of the New System:

  • New Permanent Certificate with Unique Code: All existing practitioners must apply to receive their new certificate. The new unique registration code will be permanently linked to the practitioner, replacing older systems and ensuring lifelong traceability.

  • Online Application Portal: Practitioners can now apply, upload documents, and track their application status entirely online by visiting the SSGMC website and navigating to the registration & licensing portal. The site allows applicants to save their progress and continue later using a code sent via email or SMS.

  • Instant Public Verification: A cornerstone of the new system is public transparency. As highlighted on the new website, anyone can now verify the registration status of a medical professional instantly by visiting https://ssgmc.gov.ss

The move directly responds to a recent directive from a top official for the Medical Council to collect and provide accurate databases for all medical facilities and practitioners to eradicate quack doctors and substandard clinics.

The SSGMC reminds all health institutions, both public and private, that they are required by law to ensure all their medical employees are registered with the Council. Continuing to practice or employ unregistered practitioners is illegal.

How to Apply:

All registered practitioners (Medical Doctors, Pharmacists, Dentists, and Specialists) should:

  1. Visit the official SSGMC website: https://ssgmc.gov.ss.

  2. Navigate to the ‘Registration and Licensing’ then to the ‘ Registration portal’ section.

  3. Follow the prompts to start a new application for the Permanent Registration Certificate. The system allows you to securely upload required documents and track your application’s progress.

The Council’s offices remain located at the Ministry of Health building in the Ministerial complex in Juba.

For more information, practitioners and the public are encouraged to visit the new website, subscribe to the newsletter for updates, or contact the SSGMC through info@ssgmc.gov.ss or visiting the office.
